Our Ethos
We may be small, but our hearts are full and our purpose is big. We're driven by a deep desire to move the needle for the environment, and for children in need. Nurturing our local community and being gentle on the earth are values we hold close and is woven into everything we do.
Contributing to the Sustainability of the Fashion Industry
Willoughby Kids is a slow fashion brand that is deeply committed to reducing our impact on this beautiful planet. We make thoughtful choices every step of the way in our design and manufacturing process. Our ultimate goal is for you to enjoy sustainable fashion that’s also affordable.
We order our stock in small, limited batches so that we are not producing a heap of waste.
The fabrics we use, both the main fabric and the lining, are made with either organic cotton or sustainable fabrics with the exception of fabric for tutu dresses which we unavoidably use nylon or polyester. We are actively seeking recycled polyester alternatives where possible, however this has proven to be difficult for a small brand like us to access. Affordability and style matter to us, so we do our best to strike a thoughtful balance, always with the hope that the textile industry continues moving toward more sustainable solutions for even the most whimsical and specialised fabrics.
Most of our packaging materials are made from recycled paper and compostable materials. We will be switching to cotton ribbon once our current ribbon stock is used up so that 100% of our packaging is sustainable.
We currently use Sendle to ship the majority of our packages, as they’re the only carrier that offers 100% carbon-neutral delivery. They achieve this by calculating the carbon emissions from each parcel and offsetting them through investments in verified environmental projects, like forest conservation and clean energy initiatives. From time to time, we may use Australia Post when needed, but we remain committed to choosing the most sustainable option whenever possible.
Ethical work practices are at the heart of everything we do. We only collaborate with manufacturers who share our values of fair treatment and respect for workers.
Sustainability is a journey, one we’re constantly learning from and evolving with. As the fashion industry moves toward more conscious materials and processes, we hope it becomes easier to offer these choices to our customers in a way that remains accessible.
There’s still a long road ahead for sustainability to become the norm, but when you choose something from Willoughby Kids, you can feel confident that every step, from design to delivery, has been thoughtfully considered with this in mind.
Donating to Help Children & Families Facing Rare Diseases and Genetic Conditions
Willoughby Kids is dedicated to supporting organisations that are making a difference in the lives of children with rare diseases and genetic conditions. Children suffering from Rare Diseases and genetic conditions are a group often referred to as the ‘orphans of the health system', because of a
-
Lack of research & treatments - Rare diseases affect only a small number of children, so pharmaceutical companies have no financial incentive to develop treatments for them.
-
Limited expertise - Many rare conditions are unfamiliar to most doctors, meaning delayed or incorrect diagnoses. Leaving kids to struggle with their chronic, unexplained symptoms.
-
Few support structures - Specialist clinics, tailored rehabilitation programs, and appropriate equipment may be scarce or unavailable for some families.
-
Fragmented care - Families may have to navigate multiple systems (hospital, education, disability services) without a coordinated plan.
-
High costs - Even when treatments exist, they can be extremely expensive and not covered by standard health insurance or public funding.
The combination of these factors means that, compared to more common conditions, children with rare diseases and genetic conditions are often overlooked, under-supported, and left to struggle “without a home” in the healthcare system.
We donate a portion of sales between two different charity organisations that work tirelessly to support the children and families who have 'fallen through the cracks' of the healthcare system.
Steve Waugh Foundation
The Steve Waugh Foundation is dedicated to helping improve the quality of life for children and young people living with Rare Diseases in a holistic manner.
They endeavour to raises awareness, build connections and support networks within the Rare Disease community to continue to be ‘somewhere to turn’ for families.
They believe no one should have to stand alone and strive to be the support team for those who need it most.
Genetic Alliance (GA) is a not for profit company that works with and supports people who are affected directly or indirectly by rare genetic conditions/diseases throughout Australia.
It is a peak umbrella group for genetic conditions/diseases, so rare they do not have their own support group.
By supporting Willoughby Kids, you’re helping us make a meaningful contribution to these important causes that are close to our hearts. Thankyou so much.
